Ron E. Back is the drummer on Variable Unit's first release, Seven Grain.
After growing up in a successful musical family in Omaha, Ron E. Beck headed
west at the age of eighteen to broaden his musical horizons. Within a year,
in 1971, Ron E. found himself laying foundation for soul legend Clifford
Coulter on Impuse rare-groove classic "Do It Now, Worry About It Later".
Soon a Bay Area first-call sessionist, Ron E. proceeded to weave musical
web with masters as diverse as John Lee Hooker and Carlos Santana before
settling in with funk icons Tower Of Power. Most recently he recorded with
blues diva Sister Monica, between giged dates with soul-jazz legends, Big
John Patton and Calvin Keys.
In Ron E. Beck's long and tenuous career, an early journey through the essential
rudiments would make him one of the most highly demanded drummers in the
Bay Area. As a first-call sessionist in the 1970's, he worked with greats
such as John Lee Hooker, Carlos Santana, and Clifford Coultier, before eventually
settling in with the funk icons Tower Of Power.
Most recently he recorded with blues diva Sister Monica, in-between honoring
tour dates with soul-jazz legends Big John Patton and Calvin Keys.
