The highly anticipated album entitled Sunset Scavenger included a likeness of two garbage trucks as the album cover art. Immediately upon the albums release, the record company was threatened with legal action for the alleged infringement of the garbage company's trademark. How could there be confusion between a hip-hop record and a garbage company? "We've asked ourselves the same question," exclaims Gregory Howe, Wide Hive Records founder and CEO. "What reasonable person would confuse the two? Alas, we thought the likelihood of confusion was non-existent, but we couldn't afford to get dragged through the courts to defend ourselves in the kind of battle that can often take years to resolve." Although Wide Hive Records believes that the album title by the noted Bay Area hip-hop artist would in no way be confused with nor negatively impact the business of a waste disposal company, the matter has been settled pursuant to Wide Hive's agreement to change the album title and remove any images of the company's garbage trucks on all future pressings. New artwork and album title in tow, DJ Zeph's revamped Sunset Salvage offers up a diverse range of hip-hop and funk driven instrumental jams. The highly acclaimed release is available in three formats - CD, Double Vinyl LP and 12". The record boasts guest artists such as Lyrics Born of the Lifesavas, "Boots" of the Coup and Azeem, and currently broke the top 10 Hip-Hop charts at CMJ. Wide Hive records is one of the leading purveyors of Hip-Hop, experimental, downtempo and jazz releases from notables such as Calvin Keys, Phil Ranelin, Variable Unit, dissent, and DJ Quest. The record label is dedicated to developing careers of quality musicians by supplying them with a creative outlet to pursue their visions. Portland Mercury "Zeph splices the emceeing with trippy, old- timey female singing which takes the edge off the intense verbal assault. Underscore matches beats with what sounds like cellos and violins to a mellifluous, and romantic effect." Tuscon Citizen "On his latest CD, "Sunset Scavenger," DJ Zeph makes a strong case that a hip-hop producer can, and should, be taken seriously as a musical composer even as he delivers the best dance record of the year so far." All Music Guide "While Zeph's grooves are funky and gritty, they also have a certain jazziness -- the sort of jazziness one associates with experimental rappers such as A Tribe Called Quest, the Jungle Brothers, Digable Planets, Common, and Pete Miser." Rap Reviews '"Sunset Scavenger" is a surprisingly comfortable mix of Jazz's sensual sound and Rap's upbeat kick.' Evil Monito Magazine "DJ Zeph along with fellow co-producer Ben Conrad has provided us with a gem. The tracks are simply dynamite." ![]() © 2004 WIDE HIVE RECORDS PO BOX 460067 SAN FRANCISCO CA 94146 |
