WIDE HIVE RECORDS PRESENTS SCOUT - A LIVE PERFORMANCE SERIES FEATURING VARIABLE UNIT + SPECIAL GUEST MCs

San Francisco, Ca - May 2, 2005 SCOUT is a series of nine recorded live performances featuring the Wide Hive label collective Variable Unit and opener Cubik and Origami. Pre-registered MCs and vocalists will perform self-written raps, compositions and songs backed by Variable Unit. Each evening, the performances will be recorded at the Red Devil Lounge in San Francisco by a separated audio system. At the end of the series, Wide Hive Records will chose the best performances for a Fall 2005 release entitled Variable Unit - SCOUT. The release will be available on both CD and LP formats.

Gregory Howe, Producer, Wide Hive Records Founder and A&R for the SCOUT concept, shares his thoughts about the series: "I hope that SCOUT will provide an atmosphere for collectively inspired co-creation. If the level of improvisational MCs matches the level of musicianship of this band, we'll have one hell of a series."

Variable Unit's line up for SCOUT (DJ Quest: Turntable, Thomas McCree: Drums, Matt Montgomery: Bass, Jacob Elijah Againsky: Keys, D.U.S.T: Vocal, Gregory Howe: Production) is the core behind the VU releases Mayhemystics OutBreaks, VU: Mayhemystics and VU: Handbook for the Apocalypse. The members of VU are highly regarded collectively, however, all of the artists also have independent recognition.

D.U.S.T. has several compositions featured on Zion I's new album and tours regularly with the group. DJ Quest, a well-known pioneer of the turntable, released several recordings with The Bulletproof Space Travelers, Live Human, and on his own. Jacob Elijah Aginsky recorded with Blackalicious and plays with Vivindo De Pao and Mingus Amungus, among others. Matt Montgomery co-authored VU The Promise, Handbook for the Apocalypse (CMJ #7) and "Rebel Music" from Mayhemystics (CMJ #4). He also plays in the San Francisco area with the Calvin Keys Trio. Thomas McCree plays on VU's Handbook for the Apocalypse and Mayhemystics, and tours constantly in musical forms as diverse as gospel, reggae and hip-hop.

SCOUT is Gregory Howe's seventh production for VU and his eleventh production for Wide Hive Records. He co-produced DJ Zeph I (CMJ #1) and Phil Ranelin's Inspiration, and is additionally known as the primary artist behind the critically acclaimed dissent.
